today is a very sad day for this country and for those of us who believe that intellectual matters and honesty can make a difference in this world. this country has just elected george w. bush to represent and lead this great nation for another four years. i simply cannot understand. he could not have won based on the war because it just keeps getting worse day by day. he could not have won because of stellar economic policy or projections because according to economic experts the future looks a lor more red then green. he could not have won based on the overall improvement of the general quality of life in this country because 47M are still uninsured, education is still underfunded, and job numbers are well below the necessary. he did not win based on a brilliant plan to turn this whole mess, which he has created, around simply because no such plan exists. so why did he win, not only the electoral vote, but the popular vote with a 3.5M margin (this is a first in the history of the US?) i'll tell you one theory: he won not because of the aformentioned issues but INSPITE of them. he ran a campaign based on VALUES and won. most of america is not educated or sophisticated or metropolitan enough to separate god and state. most of america would rather see same sex marriages banned then an improvement of the quality of education for their children. they want to ban abortion and stem cell research because it is against their religion to kill,(this only applies to a couple of organized cells and the arguement breaks down when it comes to killing people with a lethal dose)instead of finding cures for neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases. they voted for him because he's just like them: a stupid, simple, recovering alcoholic-turned born-again-christian with whom they can see themselves drinking a beer while wathing sunday night football. like kesha said (very wisely) this is not america we live in people...go to kansas, that's america. i hope that america is content with drinking a beer with a president that has just been allowed to fuck up again for the next four years. perhaps being drunk for the next four years will make them go by a bit faster and a bit less painful (a bit like being raped while intoxicated). lets all hope he doesn't kill us in the process. a sad sad day.

it couldn't be more true. he won because unlike what we hoped for, this country's majority is a complete polarity from us. And that they can relate to him the way we cannot. and it's indeed a very sad day.

see greshnik, you are now demonstrating exactly what we've been talking about here. the difference between the two camps is really that we want this country to be moderate, tolerate EVERYONE's opinions, you see. But republicans present an oxymoron of an ideology - they are pro-death penalty, but against abortion ... what happened to being PRO-LIFE? How do republicans think we can fund an expensive war while giving people tax breaks? Where in the history of the WORLD have you seen something so outrageous? But I am deviating from my point. The issue is that everyone should be entitled to voice their opinion and excercise their right to freedom of choice. the republicans however are not keen on letting america, the leader of the free world do exactly that.

a coupld of comments: lesha-please don't partake in conversation if you don't take this stuff seriously, i'm really not in the mood today. lena-completely agree with you. and igor': i want everyones opinion to matter, regardless of whether it is in consensus with mine. the republicans want to force thier views on others by making their views federal laws. it's actually very simple.

the more i think about the underlying reason for this loss today the more i realize that our efforts should be primarily directed in demystifying the religious process in this nation if we ever want to move toward a more rational national agenda. less god-more facts. i always knew that religion was the root of all evil-but now i'm determined to do something about it.

kseniya...so let me get this straight - you are going to try and interfere with people's faiths? You are going to try to change their values? So if someone values life and is against abortion - you are going to impose your secular values upon them by telling them that they are wrong because their views are founded on religion and not logic? Its none of your business what their values are based on, the point is they have a right to them. This nation does not revolve around the tri-state area. If the majority of this country is religious, well then you know what, they have a right to choose a president who shares their beliefs and partakes in the religious process. It just so happens that Bush is more representative of the majority of the nation than Kerry is. Bush is not representative of you, so you didn't support him. Why should the rest of the nation support a candidate who isn't representative of them?

"Its none of your business what their values are based on, the point is they have a right to them." i couldn't agree more, that's why i supported and support a party that does not want to impose (legally that is) their views on anyone else. talking about disagreeing and institution a law based on ones beliefs are two completely different things. i want to talk to people about their beliefs not make my beliefs federal law. lesha-"less god more facts" is not want i plan to run on. that was a joke, kind of. i'm not trying to chance anyone's values or rights...that's up to the fucking president these days. i'm trying to just play around with the notion that i can appeal to people's logical and rational side instead of acting upon notions just because "god told me to do so". it's all fucked up. but i appreciate your point of view and you are absolutely entitled to one.

It's true that Bush won based on values and not politics. I understood that when I was listening to the callers on the news today morning. That's why I'm a little scared for the future. By voting for Bush, America has proven to the rest of the world that the people stand behind the government and its actions. It's not just Bush bombing Iraq now, it's also America as a whole. Ironically or not, I am a firm believer in values and in God. However, even based on my religious beliefs, I think that there are issues that the government should have no opinion in and play no role in. It says in the Bible that one should first take out the log out of his own eye before trying to take a splinter out of his neighbors'. In other words, pass no judgement. Kseniya is right, the government should not impose its moral values on the people. Looking at history, it is clear that any radicalism brings a tragic end. This is a nation that is proud to be based on freedom, democracy and choice. And no group, no matter how large, should interfere with that.

Ya pochti uveren chto postav' oni na golosovaniye ne vibor prezidenta, a pro-choice/pro-life - rezultat bil bi primerno takoy je. great points, lesha. i know...i'm thinking about the whole situation much clearer now and my vision will continue to clear up over the coming weeks and months ahead. while my values (life, reproductive rights, fairness for all, healthcare, scientific inquiry, equality, intellectuality, freedom of speech and freedom of sexual preference) are currenly not represented at the federal level, THE VALUES OF MOST AMERICANS ARE IN FACT VERY MUCH REPRESENTED AND PRESERVED. I guess that's what happens in a country where majority rules...plato has a great point in the republic that basically summarizes why philosophers could never be kings. i'm always glad to hear your prespective, lesha...you continue to pleasently surprize me.

That's why the electoral college was gonna created. Because the majority of men back in the days were considered dumb and uneducated and unable to cast the correct vote. Well even tho nothing changed in that department, now the electoral college thing can't work (by low the "electors" cannot cast a vote different from the popular vote in the state)
