| Rove's Revenge
By MAUREEN DOWD
WASHINGTON — Just how much did Karl Rove hate not being one of the cool guys in high school in the 60's? Enough to hatch schemes to marshal the forces of darkness to take over the country?
Oh, yeah.
A supporter of Nixon against Kennedy at 9, the teenage Karl was, in his description, "a big nerd," a small guy with a pocket protector, briefcase, and glasses almost as big as his head.
Even as a high school debater in Salt Lake City, "Rove didn't just want to win; he wanted the opponents destroyed," write James Moore and Wayne Slater in "Bush's Brain." "He would defeat them, slaughter them and humiliate them."

| Tom Coburn, the new senator from Oklahoma, has advocated the death penalty for doctors who perform abortions and warned that "the gay agenda" would undermine the country. He also characterized his race as a choice between "good and evil" and said he had heard there was "rampant lesbianism" in Oklahoma schools.
Jim DeMint, the new senator from South Carolina, said during his campaign that he supported a state G.O.P. platform plank banning gays from teaching in public schools. He explained, "I would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend should be hired to teach my third-grade children."

| | | Wed, Nov 3, 2004. a very sad day | | crushed |
| | today is a very sad day for this country and for those of us who believe that intellectual matters and honesty can make a difference in this world. this country has just elected george w. bush to represent and lead this great nation for another four years. i simply cannot understand. he could not have won based on the war because it just keeps getting worse day by day. he could not have won because of stellar economic policy or projections because according to economic experts the future looks a lor more red then green. he could not have won based on the overall improvement of the general quality of life in this country because 47M are still uninsured, education is still underfunded, and job numbers are well below the necessary. he did not... | |

| | | Fri, Oct 29, 2004. friday night thoughts | | so i shadowed a cardio-thoracic surgeon today. he mostly does lung cancer operations. every day i feel worse and worse about smoking especially after seeing these poor patients lose a lung because they just couldn't or didn't want to quit. am i that weak? i hate myself for smoking every day that i'm in med school more and more. funny, being an atheist i should really embrace the fact that this is all we've got. today. this life. right now. yet how stupid have i been for continuing to smoke all these years while knowing that i will most probably get cancer if i don't stop. it's almost like being a republican...
anyway, i want to say congratulations to dima and olka! i know you guys are celebrating tonight and i'm sorry i couldn't be... | |
