| | i just got back my sanity while i was away from this place we like to call "united". after a somewhat hazy time in amsterdam i visited barcelona where goudi sang to me (personally, of coarse) along with millions of others... his architecture does not have a metaphor...it is one of a kind...paris is what really did me in...it is perhaps the most beautiful place ever created by man kind (and, according to me, nature as well). notre dame is full of voices. even, perhaps, victor hugo’s. it was no small step for mankind, and definitely no small step for me to walk up those winding stairs all the way to the top where i saw the entire face of paris. the louvre is bigger then anything you can ever imagine (unless of coarse you have been to hermitage... | |
| | | Tue, May 17, 2005. my wheelchair experience | | PREFACE: UPENN MED REQUIRED ALL OF THE FIRST YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS TO SPEND 4 HOURS ONE DAY LAST WEEK IN A WHEELCHAIR IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND OUR FUTURE BOUND PATIENTS. THESE ARE SOME OF MY IMPRESSIONS
I knew as soon as I made my way into the oversized HUP wheelchair that sitting in the wheelchair must be very different then actually being in one. As Micah gallantly strolled me down Locust Walk I had to readjust my legs several times in an attempt to keep them from falling asleep. My flamboyant pink stilettos, which must have given my fraudulent nature away, kept getting stuck in the dents on the pedals. I could also keenly feel my sharp metal apartment key stabbing my outer thigh in an attempt to pierce the linen fabric that felt...
| | | Tue, Apr 5, 2005. krugman at his best (nytimes op-ed) | | An Academic Question
By PAUL KRUGMAN
It's a fact, documented by two recent studies, that registered Republicans and self-proclaimed conservatives make up only a small minority of professors at elite universities. But what should we conclude from that?
Conservatives see it as compelling evidence of liberal bias in university hiring and promotion. And they say that new "academic freedom" laws will simply mitigate the effects of that bias, promoting a diversity of views. But a closer look both at the universities and at the motives of those who would police them suggests a quite different story.
Claims that liberal bias keeps conservatives off college faculties almost always focus on the humanities and social sciences, where judgments...

| | that's right. who really cares anyway. we're all going to die...but somehow somewhere there are pieces that are always burning, almost like they really couldn't care less that we are all but mortals. and these pieces sing to me from time to time you know and i curl up under the wind with all the blankets i have and don't have and i find this really overwhelming respect for humanity for being what it is despite the fact that it's not really anything worth talking about because in an instant we are all but gold dust. and then, just for that instant, i think 'it's ok'. | |
| | | Tue, Jan 11, 2005. the good and the right | | contemplative |
| | today i started thinking about ethics. i do not mean that ethical principles entered my consciousness today for the very first time, no nothing of that nature. but i mean that i started to REALLY think, that is to say, actively consider the implications of ethical standards set by who ever is in power or whoever has an audience. there is a huge difference between good and evil vs. right and wrong. i feel like i am starting to appreciate this margin that i have never noticed to any formidable extent. cocaine use is good. it makes the person feel good and overall increases the level of happiness in that person's life (oh, no i'm not talking about me or anyone i know, of coarse). but clearly it is not RIGHT. i suppose that was a cheap example,... | |
| | | Sun, Dec 19, 2004. saturday night | | amused |
| | so it's the middle of a saturday night and i am finally drinking red wine out of my absolutely favorite glass after another 13 hour day of studying. this moment is exactly what i was looking forward to every hour of this never ending day. funny how small things matter most when you have no time to think about anything at all be it miniature or gigantically important. do you have any idea how many cranial nerves we have and how important these are to everything that happens to our head and neck? i didn't either. and people: we have holes in our skulls! no, not the ones you are thinking of. take for example your chin...there are 2 holes in your chin. i know, i know, it all sounds propasterous..(sp?) but i assure you, it is all true. and... | |
