Sometimes I really hate that my work is so weird, and that I just got here an hour ago (it's 5:30), and everyone else is going home to get his or her well deserved rest. I, on the other hand, won't get home until 10. Stupid criminals, stupid GED class that I have to teach, and there is nobody in the office...
Nobody at all. The chiropractor's office next door just closed for the day. Same with the insurance office. Our secretaries left, and other officers in my building are nowhere to be found. We have court in Jersey City tomorrow (yay, Jersey City!), so everyone is probably taking the rest of the day off. I have to work at least another 15 hours before the end of the week (I have to work 40 hours a week, but the schedule is flexible), so I have to be here. Alone. And last night, I went to see The Grudge.
I have a long and tumultuous relationship with the horror genre, dating, perhaps, to the year 1993. I was 11 years old, and fresh off the proverbial boat, ignited by the very concept of cable, and populating my young mind with all kinds of nonsense shows...from Nickelodeon to Discovery to Channel 11. The Exorcist was my first major scare. I was afraid to sleep on the bed for about a week, terrified that it would decide to indulge in some satanic dance with me on it. Then came Freddy Krueger, and long nights of sleeping by my parents' bed. They stopped letting me sleep with them, telling me, quite understandably, to grow up already. The funny thing is...recurring nightmares, insurmountable fright, and fear of the dark...none of these deterred me from watching horror movies and loving them. I guess that's where my masochism comes in! And although I grew to be less scared with age, I still assume the same "horror movie position" that I did when I was 11- hands on both sides of the head, thumbs over the ears (to quickly close them when the scary noises come on), and middle fingers over the eyes.
That's probably how I looked yesterday, for the entire duration of the movie. The worst was the scene when one of the characters is ALL ALONE in her OFFICE building, and strange stuff starts to happen. Like a creepy dead Asian woman in the stairway. And when the lady goes home that night....well, I'm not gonna spoil it for other horror movie enthusiasts.
Oy...mama...I hope I get home tonight. ::shudder:: |
