Tue, Oct 26, 2004. A day in a life of a hopeless procrustinator.

So, my friend Tanya and I discussed productivity yesterday. And how it's ridiculously hard to be productive when your schedule is flexible. So true. I totally intended to wake up at 10 today: go to Walmart, go to Costco. call my car mechanic, make a dentist appointment, go to work (perhaps), and then relax at home. Oh, and take a shower. Instead, Im doing it all wrong. I'm relaxing at home first, after waking up at 11. So, my shedule, after resting and waking up late, is already moved up by 2 hours. By now, I have to cut out one thing of my "to do list." Perhaps I can skip work....wait, I can't do that. Maybe Walmart or Costco? Most likely, a shower. But that means I can't go to work dirty. Oh well, I guess Ill just spend an extra hour or two dirtily walking around Costco. It's only 1pm, afterall.
In the meantime, my room is an abominable mess. In unsuccessful efforts to clean it just by looking at it disapprovingly, I decide that I can't possibly begin dismantling the great heaps of "stuff" without listening to a good CD. That brings me to my CD collection- also a mess. Now, if you had a choice between sorting your CDs and cleaning up the rest of the mess in your room, what would YOU do? So, clearly, the CDs need to be organized, reorganized, polished too. At which point I realize that Im missing a few. Perfect opportunity to call a friend. And it's rude to call just to ask for your CD, so you spend an hour talking to them about this and that, possibly complaining about the unfortunate early closing hours of Costco (6pm on Sunday...come on!), or about how much work you have to do (albeit it is your own damn fault for falling asleep reading Angela Carter at 2am, after indulging in meaningless banter with a friend you see all the time anyway). Now, while talking to your friend, you decide to multi-task: sort out your clothes! Winter clothes in one pile, summer clothes in another. It's not your fault that your friend discloses her plans of doing something tragically stupid (usually opposite-sex related), at which point the piles begin to lose bounderies, and soon enough you are putting your sundress right next to the ski jacket. That's when you look at the time, realize that you need to bid your friend farewell, with the wise advice of "don't do anything stupid." There is no way in hell you can continue sorting out your clothes now, especially because you also realized that the sweaters are not exactly wearable until they visit the dry-cleaners, and are probably smelling up the tanktops lost in their midst. Oh well. Time to throw it all in the closet for when you have time to sort them out.
By this point, it's 3:20. What an awkward time. As you are about to leave your house, you realize that there is no reason not to check your email, thus rounding off the time of your final departure to 4pm. Afterall, after venturing into the unknown lands of your closet, you deserve it. Nobody emailed. Just because non of your asshole friends have cared about you in the last hour, doesn't mean that you should deprive yourself of the rest and comfort of staring at your computer. Why not look up Walmart hours? Or the name of the mechanic you need to take your car to? Boring...This might very well be the perfect opportunity to make a wish list on Amazon for all the books and movies your non-asshole friends and family members could get you for Noviy God.
Really...this could continue until the moment I go to sleep. I hope this blog entry proves that I'm the queen of wasting time :(
